Descrizione dell'iniziativa

Threads of innovation. A cross-cultural design workshop to envision future textiles’ scenario of use.

The PIA aims to explore the use of Lyria textiles in furniture design, defining innovative concepts and developing prototypes, a selection of which to be presented in design related events, such as Milano Design Week 2026.

The project will involve 10 students of the bachelor/master programmes of the School of Design of Politecnico di Milano (Italy), and 10 students at the Prince Sultan University – PSU Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), in collaboration with the Lyria team. Students will be divided in teams, composed of students from both universities and/or will involve close collaboration between them, during a wokshop at Lyria Headquarters and in online activities. In this on-site workshop, students will learn the basics of fabric processing and dyeing, as well as sustainability and circularity. During such activities, students will receive rotating mentorship from faculty members of both institutions, namely Polimi and PSU.

The concepts will be presented at the Italian Embassy in Riyadh in November 2025 and later showcased at Milan Design Week in 2026.The PIA is organised in 3 phases, with the active involvement of faculty members from both universities and with a team from Lyria as textile suppliers and creative partners.

During a meeting in Riyadh in November 2025, a jury will select the concepts that will be prototyped and later presented at Milan Design Week 2026. Participation in the Riyadh meeting by students will be defined according the geopolitical situation

3. Prototype development and exhibition (January – March 2026)

After the selection of two concepts by the jury in Riyadh, the teams of students of the selected projects will further develop them as prototypes to be presented at the Milano Design Week 2026. Students develop the concepts with the necessary technical details and specifications under the guidance of the team of Lyria and of the lecturers.
